The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced that the phase nine of the voter registration exercise for 2014 Tripartite Elections will end on December 18 2013.

Phase nine covers Nkhotakota and Salima districts, Mzuzu City, Mzimba South, Mzimba Solola, Kasungu North, Kasungu North-West, Kasungu South and Kasungu South-East constituencies.

According to a recent press statement signed by MEC chief elections officer Willy Kalonga, the commission opened satellite registration centres from December 5 to 10 2013 at the Polytechnic and College of Medicine in Blantyre, Kamuzu College of Nursing (Blantyre and Lilongwe campuses), Chancellor College and St. Peter’s Major Seminary in Zomba.

“The commission is also informing the public that some centres in Chikhwawa will be re-opened because they failed to function for a day or two during registration under phase one. This has been done to fulfil the statutory requirement that registration centres should open for at least 14 days.

“The centres shall open on 14th December 2013 for one day accept for Kakoma Centre which shall open for two days from 14th December to 15th December 2013,” reads the statement in part.

The commission also said it has mobilised enough equipment and personnel for the smooth running of the exercise.
